I’m sure that you have been told before, you can’t afford to travel if you don’t have travel insurance.

Well I totally agree.  I’ve been lucky enough to not have had to claim anything major on any journey.  But I always have insurance, just in case.

Do I really need travel insurance?

Yes, Yes, and Yes you do – it’s a must!  Everyone envisages a perfect holiday when nothing goes wrong.  Buy unfortunately things to sometimes not work out at planned.

On a snow skiing trip to New Zealand, I slipped and hurt my arm, fortunately it was not broken, but I did need a doctors visit and a sling and pain killers. All of this was covered.

Not having appropriate cover, could mean you end up broke and in debt for life.

What sort of things does travel insurance cover?

  • Medical
  • Loss of Luggage
  • Death
  • Trip Cancellation
  • Loss of Passport
  • Baggage

What items should I make sure are included in my travel insurance cover?

Medical is in my opinion is the most important. A good company should give you $100,000USD coverage.

Make sure that you are covered for emergency evacuation.

Ensure the countries you are visiting are covered.

Injury, illness, possession cover

Cancelled bookings – hotel, flight transport etc

Are you covered if a family member dies and you need to urgently fly home?

Am I covered for all these things with every policy?

No.  So, please check out each policies product disclosure statement before purchasing, checking inclusions, exclusions and levels of cover.  Find one that covers you and your personal circumstances.

Some of the items that most travel insurance will not cover you for:

  • Missed flight – may or may not be covered, check your policy
  • High value specific items are not usually covered, but most insurers will offer the opportunity to ad additional insurance on specific items.
  • Leaving your belongings unattended
  • Claiming against an unapproved medical condition, such as a pre-existing medical condition
  • Engaging in reckless activities and behavior
  • Participating in high risk sports and activities
  • Traveling against government advice
  • Ignoring road and driving rules
  • Changing your mind

When should you buy your travel insurance?

You can purchase your insurance up to a couple day prior to departure…

But…

We suggest purchasing it as soon as you make a payment on any part of your trip. Such as flights or accommodation.

Should something go wrong, even prior to your leaving home, and you’ve not purchased your insurance, you will have lost the money you have paid out.

WARNING! You cannot purchase a travel insurance policy after an injury and claim retrospectively.

So should you buy Travel Insurance?

Yes and yes, our answer is still yes.

We hope that your trips are all smooth sailing and with not incidence.

REMINDER! It’s imperative that you have travel insurance!
